In early 2023, I came across some visually striking posts on LinkedIn. While I’m not usually interested in design-related content on the platform, these posts caught my attention as they frequently mentioned a tool called Midjourney. While I enjoyed the images, I wasn’t quite sure how this tool could be used in my own work.
Despite my personal reservations, it’s becoming increasingly clear that we can’t avoid the use of AI tools in many aspects of our lives. With a busy schedule over the past six months, my own learning has fallen behind and I’ve struggled to keep up with writing for my blog.
That’s why I’ve decided to turn to AI tools to help me get back on track.
Midjourney
Back on December 29, 2022, I subscribed to Midjourney. At the time, I had no idea how to get started with the tool and wasn’t familiar with Discord, which is a platform that Midjourney uses. Even now, I’m not entirely sure why Discord is necessary for using Midjourney.
Fast forward six months, and I’ve been using Midjourney for Instagram posts every week. While it’s been an okay experience, it hasn’t been great. I still haven’t had the chance to use export files in my client work. I’m hoping to improve my Midjourney skills and get more out of the tool through this blog.

If you’re not familiar with Discord, getting started with Midjourney can be a bit confusing. But don’t worry, there’s a simple solution. Just click on the Help button located in the top-right corner of Midjourney. From there, I recommend reading through the user guide before diving in. This will help you get a better understanding of how to use the tool and make the most of its features.
Quick Start
1: Log In To Your Discord Account
2: Subscribe to a Midjourney Plan
3: Go to Discord and Add the Midjourney Server
4: Go to any #General or #Newbie Channel

Midjourney generates the image, but it is not easy without learning. Please read the user guide, watch on YouTube, and find someone on Twitter.
If you know what you want (but cannot use it directly), you can use the image as a reference. Midjourney generates the image based on your reference.
/imagine prompt image prompt, text prompt, parameters prompt,
Basic formula: /imagine [main subject], [details of subject], [background], [art/image style], [lighting], [colors] [parameters (–ar 3:2, –ar 1980px × 1320px, etc)]
The most cases, we do not create entirely new things. The new ideas or designs reflect our past experiences. We can blend the two images on Midjourney.

The prompt seems easy, but describing images clearly and concisely is not very easy. In this case, we can ask Midjourney how to describe the specific image.
/describe image
The parameter may make users confused, or many people do not use it. If you are a Midjourney user, you have to know at least the ratio parameter to generate the visual assets for the website.

We can generate the image by /imagine, but it has a limit. We have to combine the image prompt, text prompt, and parameter prompt.
Learn from the front runner
While a good prompt can be the key to getting great results with AI tools like Midjourney, the process of coming up with prompts can also be a bit of torture. Fortunately, there are prompt generators available to help streamline this process.
There are many different prompt generators out there, but it can be difficult to determine which one is the best fit for your needs. To find the right one for you, I recommend doing a quick online search for “prompt generator” and checking out some of the options available. With a little research, you should be able to find a tool that works well for you and helps you get the most out of Midjourney.

For the first six months of using Midjourney, I didn’t have a good grasp of the image prompt and its parameters. This meant that when I wanted to remove certain objects, I didn’t know how to do it and had to rely on text prompts. Sometimes this worked out okay, but other times the results were less than satisfactory.
However, once I started using the image prompt, I saw a huge improvement in the quality of the results. I found that using photos from Unsplash and then uploading them to Midjourney was a bit time-consuming, as I had to use the image URL for the prompt. It would be great if this process could be integrated more seamlessly, perhaps similar to how it works in Figma.
Fortunately, modern AI tools are generally designed to be user-friendly, with UX/UI designers involved in the project to ensure ease of use. Even if you’re not familiar with the tool, you can get started by reading the user guide and watching tutorials on YouTube.
Learning to use these tools doesn’t have to be difficult. With a little patience and persistence, you can become proficient in no time.
